San Pietro is part of the Sulcitan island chain, which lie off the south-western tip of Sardinia.  Often called ‘an island within an island’, San Pietro is beautiful; its central area dense with pines and Mediterranean maquis of wild rosemary, orchids and succulents, often growing almost to the water’s edge.  Winding footpaths lead down to crescent-shaped white beaches with crystal clear waters.  The island’s only town is the charming Carloforte; its pastel coloured buildings reflecting its rich Ligurian and Arab history.  The town has established itself as one of the most attractive destinations for the discerning traveller. Settled by a Genovese community in the 18th century, Ligurian cuisine is particularly popular, and the island is renowned for its tuna specialities.  In May, the four-day tuna festival takes place, when chefs from all over the world gather for the island’s famous tuna cooking competition.  Towards the end of summer, San Pietro stages a colourful festival, with street theatre, dance, puppet shows and stilt-walking.

 

The four-star Hotel Riviera is perfectly located, directly on the promenade in Carloforte and just a short walk away from the historical centre.  The hotel offers just 43 spacious rooms of contemporary design, beautifully decorated in white and terracotta, many with balconies and stunning sea views over the harbour.  All have complimentary high speed internet access, satellite LCD TV, mini-bar, safe and air-conditioning.  

 

The hotel offers a breakfast room, bar, and a panoramic sun terrace, which overlooks the Port of Carloforte and is a delightful setting for enjoying a relaxing evening cocktail. Afterwards, one can take a leisurely stroll around town, followed by dinner at one of the  many restaurants Carloforte has to offer. Alternatively, enjoy the hotel’s open-air ‘dine & wine’ option, which offers stylish BBQs and buffet dinners on the terrace, sometimes with live entertainment (operates May-Oct). For lunch, the bar also offers light cuisine, with fusion tapas and snacks.  In-room dining is also available and an all day dining bistro service offers Mediterranean and local cuisine.

 

 For the sports-minded, the hotel can arrange sailing trips, diving, and the hire of scooters and bicycles, which are a great way to explore the island.  Trekking and walking tours can also be arranged.

 

If you are looking for something a little different, San Pietro is possibly one of the Mediterranean’s best kept secrets, even to those who have visited Sardinia before.
